We have just entered the month of Nissan. Nissan - from the wording Nais, miracle, it's the month of miracles. Miracle? What's a miracle? It is popularly held amongst the wise sages of our faith that Hashem is constantly recreating the world every second. Holy smokes, WHAT a MIRACLE!! Why is Nissan reserved as the month of miracles?
We just finished the month of Adar, in which occurred the miracle of Purim. Wait, there's miracle again. Ah, the difference here is that it was a hidden miracle. It seemed to kind of just take place through the occurrence of 'random' events. But then we enter Nissan and it's BAM, miracles revealed right there in front of your face. Blood, frogs, lice, beasts, hail, fire, water splitting, pillars of fire -- what more could a miracle seeker ask for? That's the secret of this month, revealed miracles. Whereas last month we had to look very deeply into things to find the miracles, this month the potential for them to be seen clearly in front of our eyes is much more accessible. Wait a minute, you might say, I ain't seein' no water splittin'!?
Nissan is also from the wording nisiyon, trials or testings. What is the connection between trials and revealed miracles? The answer is that miracles are being revealed to us all the time in the decisions we make and the difficulties we face. It's just that most of the time, we are choosing not to see them. We often prefer our 'G-dly' experiences to be moments of elation, ecstasy and generally feeling good. It's just not that way. Or at least it's not JUST that way.
When the Jewish people came out of Egypt, they were seeing unbelievable miracles all the time, but then what happened? Amalek happened! Amalek came, attacked the Jewish people and they lost faith. Why? Because they didn't realize that that was from Hashem also.
We aren't living in the days when Hashem is showing us clearly the miracles as he did back in those days. But maybe it's only because we aren't looking hard enough. Hashem is testing us, He's testing our faith and how badly we want Him in our lives. Hashem is recreating the world all the time and He is creating every situation in which we find ourselves. If we just open our eyes, the miracles are there just waiting for us to reveal them. Have a great Pesach, the time of our FREEDOM!
