Feel Like Makin' Simcha

The Ishbitzer Rebbe says that the orla (foreskin) that we cut away with the brit mila (circumcision) is really the RA LAH ("It's Evil"), and that by doing a brit mila we take off the klipah (shell/husk) and reveal the good inside. Such amazing good.

Among our Sages, there is also the point of view that the main reason we do a brit mila physically is to see it and be reminded about the mitzvah of u'maltem et orla l'vavchem, to circumcise the foreskin our hearts. So I was just thinking that we give the baby a little wine so he doesn't feel the pain. In Tractate Pesachim of the Talmud, we say there is no simcha (happiness) except for meat and wine. It continues to state that since the destruction of our Holy Temple, may it be rebuilt speedily in our days, we have no longer any joy from eating meat. I'm sure this Talmud is very deep, but on the surface, it is teaching that drinking wine still causes simcha. So we give our beautiful baby boys some wine, simcha, and proceed to give them a physical brit mila. In life, too, as we cut out the klipahs, the RA, the evil, from our hearts, in order to walk purely with G-d, we need a little simcha.

If we're committed to doing G-d's will, we don't have to worry; we will, with Hashem's help, fulfill our missions on this planet. We'll circumcise our hearts. But, OW, sometimes it can really hurt to do the right thing. So simcha is the medium. Like Rav Shlomo says, If you're not drunk on Shabbos, what are you doing it for? May every single Jew, and every single person merit to be drunk with jam sessions, Hallels, b-ball games, amazing mitzvot, powerful brachot, kabbalat shabbat, oneg shabbat, seudat shlishit, malave malka, havdala, SHABBOS!

Good Shabbos, Good Yontif, Tizku l'simcah
